Bel Canto (P.S.), by Ann Patchett

“Blissfully Romantic….A strange, terrific, spellcasting story.” — San Francisco Chronicle

“Bel Canto…should be on the list of every literate music lover. The story is riveting, the participants breathe and feel and are alive, and throughout this elegantly-told novel, music pours forth so splendidly that the reader hears it and is overwhelmed by its beauty.” —Lloyd Moss, WXQR

“Glorious.” —The New Yorker

Ann Pratchett’s award winning, New York Times bestselling Bel Canto balances themes of love and crisis as disparate characters learn that music is their only common language. As in Patchett’s other novels, including Truth & Beautyand The Magician’s Assistant, the author’s lyrical prose and lucid imagination make Bel Canto a captivating story of strength and frailty, love and imprisonment, and an inspiring tale of transcendent romance.

Amazon.com Review
In an unnamed South American country, a world-renowned soprano sings at a birthday party in honor of a visiting Japanese industrial titan. His hosts hope that Mr. Hosokawa can be persuaded to build a factory in their Third World backwater. Alas, in the opening sequence, just as the accompanist kisses the soprano, a ragtag band of 18 terrorists enters the vice-presidential mansion through the air conditioning ducts. Their quarry is the president, who has unfortunately stayed home to watch a favorite soap opera. And thus, from the beginning, things go awry.

Among the hostages are not only Hosokawa and Roxane Coss, the American soprano, but an assortment of Russian, Italian, and French diplomatic types. Reuben Iglesias, the diminutive and gracious vice president, quickly gets sideways of the kidnappers, who have no interest in him whatsoever. Meanwhile, a Swiss Red Cross negotiator named Joachim Messner is roped into service while vacationing. He comes and goes, wrangling over terms and demands, and the days stretch into weeks, the weeks into months.

With the omniscience of magic realism, Ann Patchett flits in and out of the hearts and psyches of hostage and terrorist alike, and in doing so reveals a profound, shared humanity. Her voice is suitably lyrical, melodic, full of warmth and compassion. Hearing opera sung live for the first time, a young priest reflects: Never had he thought, never once, that such a woman existed, one who stood so close to God that God's own voice poured from her. How far she must have gone inside herself to call up that voice. It was as if the voice came from the center part of the earth and by the sheer effort and diligence of her will she had pulled it up through the dirt and rock and through the floorboards of the house, up into her feet, where it pulled through her, reaching, lifting, warmed by her, and then out of the white lily of her throat and straight to God in heaven. Joined by no common language except music, the 58 international hostages and their captors forge unexpected bonds. Time stands still, priorities rearrange themselves. Ultimately, of course, something has to give, even in a novel so imbued with the rich imaginative potential of magic realism. But in a fractious world, Bel Canto remains a gentle reminder of the transcendence of beauty and love. --Victoria Jenkins

From Library Journal
Lucky Mr. Hosokawa. The well-connected Japanese businessman, now in an unnamed South American country on yet another job, is having a very special birthday party. At the home of the country's vice president, opera singer Roxane Cos will be performing for him and his guests. But what's this? Armed men invading the premises? These ragtag revolutionaries are looking for the president and disappointed that he is not there, but that doesn't stop them from holding the party goers hostage. What happens after that was, for this reviewer, a story that failed to ignite. Patchett (The Patron Saint of Liars) generates little tension as she moves her players around the board, and one is disappointed that there is little reflection about the head-on clash of art and life. This book is getting a big promotional pitch, however, so libraries may want to consider.

From The New Yorker
An impoverished South American country hosts a birthday extravaganza for a Japanese industrialist in the hope of securing new foreign investment. The lure? An internationally renowned lyric soprano. Indeed, when Roxane Coss sings, even the ragtag terrorists who are about to flood through the air-conditioning vents and take the guests hostage hold their breath, transported by the beauty of her voice. Patchett's tragicomic novel—a fantasia of guns and Puccini and Red Cross negotiations—invokes the glorious, unreliable promises of art, politics, and love. Against this grand backdrop, the smallest gestures bloom with meaning: a pretty governess stitching up the cheek of her employer with her sewing kit; a young terrorist discovering the tyranny of wearing a watch; an exasperated French diplomat risking his life to peel an eggplant with a proper knife.

In comparison with Ann Patchett's reputation, this magum opus was okay. You can feel other writers' frustration. Superfiical.
By Ada Ardor
I candidly do not know how to feel about this book. Although there are plenty of parts I did like. The writing was mediocre, and there wasn't any true depth with any of the characters. There could have been more.

When this book first got published, I saw this book everywhere, and I was admittedly intrigued. I only bought and read this book because of Lucy Grealy, who wrote the heart-wrenching Autobiography of a Face. Ann Patchett was purportedly a friend of Grealy, and Patchett wrote her own book on Grealy. From the media summaries of Patchett's memoir, I do not think Patchett understood her friend at all. Her criticisms of her friend appear condescending, superficial, and even condemning, and I think because her friend is no longer in existence, Patchett saw a wonderful opportunity. One of judgment and no understanding, and you cannot judge her friend unless you walked in her shoes. But I know in Patchett's simple mind, she thought she was doing a good thing.

Bel Canto was okay.

Patchett does not have Grealy's command of words - or an inviting, welcoming writing style. Patchett's words are staid, as if she wants to be a writer, but she has nowhere to go. No doubt, she has had many teachers who praised her, encouraged her, and thought she was at least some apitute. Unfortunately for Patchett, she took it to heart, and did not realize her teachers were just being nice. And for Patchett's part, she is earnest, and she took many classes. She is obviously educated, diligent, tries hard but she has no talent. This will be the last book I will read of Patchett, and I do not care to read again. She has nothing to teach me. I cannot learn from her. And her writing is no different from any stock book.

Patchett's confidence is munificent, but no one told her she should decide on another vocation. I do not know how this book got published. The writing was neither stellar, poetic or precise, and I forced myself to plow on through. I concede that Patchett managed to provoke some emotion, and I cared for many of the characters. But a lot of this book was not convincing, and it was on par with a Michael Bay film. The relationships and dialogue seemed to come straight from Michael Bay film. I just could not care. And this is her magnum opus.

Let's forget all that. Let's focus on the story, which was not even original. Story of how a poor South American country wanted to beckon Howskawa, and invited opera singer Roxane Coss to delight him. Howskakwa's interpreter is Gen. Howskwawa lives a prviileged life, loves opera, and because of a birthday present from one of his daughters, loves Coss.

They cannot speak; Gen serves as interpreter, but Roxanne falls in love with Howskawaw.

Let's forget the mediocre writing. Let's move on to the story.

One of the central flaws was how this renegade group managed to even get in the house. Don't these heads of state have security? I know how they snuck in, but it seems they did it without a modicum of protest. Even a baby could elude all security protocols.

Not once did I buy into soprano Roxanne Coss's love affair with the chief admirer of her music. The most poignant relationship for me was Gen and Carmen, and I thought Carmen one of the most intriguing characters of the book, and I wanted to know more about her: her home life, how she became a terrorist, her infatuation with the interpreter.

Also the ending was abrupt and unfinished. Sad lovers married each other, and each are unhappy and in mourning. I wanted to know what happened to the rest of the hostages.

Based on this book, do not think will read Patchett again. Did not learn from her; she has nothing to offer me.

Hostages and terrorists, changes and growth
By Roseann S.
What happens when a large group of multicultural people who do not speak the same language are kidnapped and held by terrorists for a long period? How do they develop and change? How do the terrorists change over time? How do the hostages and terrorists come to relate to each other? These are the questions posed and answered in Bel Canto and how the opera singer touches the lives of almost everyone. You may feel it is a bit improbable and too detailed at the beginning but sticking with it you will get into it and wonder at how the plot develops wanting to see each new unfolding until... suddenly it comes to an inevitable conclusion which you probably were not expecting. It was a more interesting and compelling read than most I have had in recent times. I recommend it to anyone tired of the same old plots. This is definitely not that.

Why people "Love" or "Hate" this book !?!
By Amazon Customer
I learned about this book while reading The Artisan: An Artistic Assassin Thriller - which is a super fast-reading thriller that I loved.

But before I bought Bel Canto I knew by reading the plethora of reviews and by being familiar with the genius of Ann Patchett in general, that this was going to be a novel with a completely different pace.

And I loved it!!

But for those of you that are having trouble "getting it" ...

Here is why some people Don't "Understand" this book:

1) They are expecting a typical American Style thriller that is high in action. but lower in emotion and characterization through action like the wonderful Black List: A Thriller. Yes, these books are great, but they are different.

2) They have never read the English thriller books such as Where Eagles Dare that are very, very descriptive of every character and the "situations" they are in. Bel Canto is very much written like a true English thriller.

3) They are utterly unfamiliar with the genre of literary fiction such as People of the Book and are perhaps don't have the right kind of attention span.

Here why people "Love, Love, Love" this book:

1) The tension starts off with a bang then continues to build to peaks and valleys through out the book, making them always want to know what is around the corner.

2) The real-ness of the characters that are so unique yet so fabulously true to type. Byt he end of the book every reader know he will take this characters with him for the rest of his life.

3) The privileged look the reader gets inside the culture and psychological progression of a long term hostage situation.

4) When an intelligent reader reads this or any of Ann Patchett's books, he is changed forever. Your perspective and your thoughts are changed forever.

And ...

If you take your time and read this book, you will thank me forever.

Also you might want to re-read The Godfather this book is definitely worth a second round.

20 minutes and little to show for it.
By N. Gesner
I read the book cover-to-cover in about twenty minutes and couldn't believe it was (at one time) selling for nearly thirty bucks! I got more out of the first few pages than I did the remainder of the book because it seemed to say the same things over and over. It spends a large chunk giving examples of accrual accounting even though they state almost everyone uses cash-based. The basics of accounting (keeping two books, for every credit there must be a debit, etc.) could easily be explained in a couple pages. The difference between accounting for one property and accounting for multiple (property management) could be explained in a couple pages. Add a couple pages for the graphics and you've got a brochure, just like others have stated. Too much time was wasted saying the same thing over and over.

I've been using Buildium to manage 120 properties for a couple months. It works very well for me, simplifies a lot of processes, and has taught me quite a bit about property management accounting. This book added nothing. I originally thought of telling Buildium they should send this book to everyone that signs up for their software, but after reading it I don't think it would help anyone. They already provide video tutorials online that give much, much more information than this book does.

Bottom line: I don't recommend this for anyone, whether you use the Buildium program or something else. I wanted to expand my knowledge of accounting but it's clear I'll need to attend a class or get another book.

Property Management accounting lite !
By Evil Queen
I am a Regional Property Manager that continually looks for training material for my onsite managment employee's. Many of our employee's start as Leasing Consultants and don't understand accounting or it's terms, which is critical as they progress up the ladder. August is the start of budget season, what better time to explain basic accounting to those that showed interest. At the end of the 45 minute session, my employee's had a better understanding of how all the accounting reports I review are intertwined by way of the General Ledger and what debits/credits really are. They now understand how a concession is treated and what it does to the financial picture. Just transferred an Assistant Manager from a cash basis property to an accrual based property and I used the definitions in this book to explain the difference between the two. We have a tendency to speak in pm terms when on the property and fail to realize that many of our employees are "Faking it till they make it". Embarassed to inform anyone that they really don't understand everything we throw out on a daily basis. I myself have been in the industry 20+ years, and this book would have been extremely helpful in those earlier years of my career.

For the small owner/operator that does not have any property management accounting skills ~ you need this book. I have recently taken on the management of two small assets that were owner managed, unfortunately they are now owned by the bank and although the loss of the properties to foreclosure isn't solely due to the lack of accounting it may have enlightend the couple to the severity of the sitution much quicker.

I would not suggest that you use this guide as your sole resource, however if what you need is a simple to understand guide as to property management accounting terms and simple accounting entries then this is definately a good place to start. Knowledge is always worth something ... best $10 that someone searching for this information can spend.

Never a dull moment!
By JN
Fated is the second book in The Marked Series and honestly I couldn’t have asked for a better follow up to the YA urban fantasy. There’s more action, enemies, loss, and love triangle mayhem (my fav!). I was having trouble myself deciding who I wanted Hanna to be with, the strong Guardian Will or the now tortured Jared.

Fated begins right where the first left off with Hanna close to death after a vicious attack from Blondie. We learned that Jared is the Chosen One from the prophecy, the half Fallen, half Guardian who will decide the fate of the world, good or bad. With her newly bestowed symbol (and awesome powers) Hanna and her friends fight to keep him safe, but Blondie is constantly one step ahead of them, determined to capture Jared at any cost. And he’s not the only one who wants to get their hands on Jared. In the end Hanna must choose not only between who she truly wants to be with, but who is truly worth saving.

The world of Fated comes alive, drawing you into an epic battle of good versus evil, one that not all will survive. There’s a mixture of action, love, heartbreaking loss, and even humor that had me hooked from the beginning all the way to the very last word. I loved the second even more than the first (didn’t think it was possible) and I’m dying to know what happens next with Hanna, Jared, Will, and the new threat Blondie has released. Please hurry with another!

She went to Jared!
By Amazon Customer
Picking up where Marked left off, Fated draws us back into the world of Hanna, whose life was turned upside-down when she found out she was destined to play an instrumental role in the war between Guardians and the Fallen. Things got even more complicated when she found out that her best friend Jared is the Chosen One - and when he hits his 18th birthday, a choice between the darkness and the light will tips the scales to one side or another.

When Jared is taken by the sadistic Fallen leader Blondie, Hanna finds solace in the arms of the handsome Guardian Will, thus creating a love triangle of disastrous proportions. Will Hanna's betrayal push Jared to the wrong side? On top of that, there are some Guardians that would just as soon destroy Jared to save the world from him having to make his decision at all.

The action was nonstop in this book. Emotions ran at an alarmingly high level throughout the book (and at times, I had to put the book down because of it), but the fast pace and the excellent characters made this a fantastic read.

A Crazy Ride!
By Kelly McPike
*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

This book is such a crazy ride! TL McDonald knows how to keep the action coming page after page. The book picks up right where MARKED left off, and there isn't a dull moment. I found Hanna even more relatable through this book because she is under such stress that it makes her lash out in ways that feel real, and I appreciate that she makes mistakes. For me, that makes her feel more human. McDonald writes in such a way that it really feels like a teenager is telling the story, which adds to that effect. It was also neat to see how different characters react to finding out what's really going on with her. Admittedly, I'm a sucker for a good love triangle that really makes me feel the heartbreak, and I definitely felt it in this book. Team Will all the way! I liked this book even better than the first (and I know how hard it is to get a sequel that lives up to the first book). I can't wait to see where the story goes in the next installment.

Standard for the field of S/W Reliability
By Frederick Arioli
This is an excellent technical book that should be a standard reference for anyone working in the field of S/W QA/Reliablity. The work assumes a mathematical background at the upper division/graduate level. The section on orthogonal defect classification is especially good. This is an essential work for anyone compiling metrics for gauging how well a S/W development effort is progressing. Software is supplied for performing one's own analyses. Meaty stuff for the serious S/W QA engineer! Well done.

The best handbook I've seen on the subject.
By Walter Stoneburner
Professor Lyu defines, catalogs, explains, and demonstrates concepts and models for reliability. If you're trying to answer questions like "based on historical data, when is the next expected failure," or "what model best predicts my software's reliability," or "when will the software be stable" then you need this book.
True to its name, it is a handbook, so you can jump around and cross reference, but you can also read it like a book.
Note, however, that there is some fairly heavy statistical math. Don't let all the greek letters scare you. It's all explained, and it has a fantastic appendix that covers all you need to know concerning statistics to use the book without the mumbo-jumbo.
To complete your collection, go to the web and obtain a copy of SMERFS^3, which is a software package developed by Dr. William Farr that does all the modeling math for you. Additionally, check out the book Software Reliability by Musa/Iannio/Okumoto (0-07-044093-X). These two things, together with this book will equip you for just about anything you need to measure.

Be the first kid on your block to get one of these....if you have the specific need for it !!!!
By Geekus
A classic for those who know little to nothing about software reliability, and how to engineer it in. It's more than just "testing the hell" out of a program. You really need to design reliability and safety into your code and its design documents. This book is an excellent survey of the classical methods on just how to do that.

The bonus cd has many tools and methods to make this job more straightforward for the practitioner.

Highly recommended.....great seller, great book, quick delivery, superb condition. A keeper....

overview of prehistoric archeology
By Peter Gray
I have been hoping to find a book that would integrate archeological, genetic, linguistic and ethnographic evidence into a concise yet comprehensive overview of the history of our species. I thought perhaps I had found such a book here, but was wrong. This volume provides a good overview of the archeology of our genus, covering global developments over the past 2 million years. However, it does not integrate genetic or linguistic data well, though both speak to the topics the book attempts to address. While appreciating the author's apparent authority on European archeology, I was dismayed by the treatment of other topics. The question of the origins of our species, despite some opinions otherwise, has been settled in favor of a single origin about 150,000 years ago in Africa, but here the issue is discussed as an open question. Further, treatment of hunter-gatherers, such as views on the sexual division of labor, at times seems awkward in light of other work cited in the book (e.g. Kelly 1995). Such issues lead me to wonder if the author has accepted too much data uncritically; also, the rich archeological data base would be better integrated with the theoretical perspectives of evolutionary psychology and human behavioral ecology. Less critically, the book nicely summarizes archeological and ethnographic evidence bearing on types of human societies, such as chiefdoms. These types of societies, generally discussed in a sequence of increasing sociocultural complexity, are seen as signposts along processes of sociocultural change. It it these latter aspects that provide the book with its main advantages.

Fine Overview; 4.5 Stars
By R. Albin
This is a very good overview of a very, very broad sweep of human history, essentially from the emergence of modern Homo to threshold of the emergence of civilizations. The main drawback of this book is that it was published several years ago and parts are somewhat dated, something predicted repeatedly by Bogucki at various points in the text. There is no mention, for example, of the recent discovery of additional hominin species like the Denisovans. Some areas discussed as controversial by Bogucki, such as an early horizon for human occupation of the Americas, have now apparently been settled.

Given that this is a text on prehistory, Bogucki opens appropriately with a concise but useful discussion of the limitations of archaeological methods and problems in interpretation of findings. This involves some history of archaeology as a discipline but provides a good perspective on the subsequent historical recontructions. A short discussion of hominin evolution (unavoidably dated) follows. The remainder of the book is a chronologically ordered description of archaeological finds and interpretations of those finds to reconstruct the evolution of human societies across the wide swathe of time. This is relatively difficult because Bogucki has to cover findings in many regions. He does a nice job of highlighting particularly important sites/findings across the world.

Bogucki avoids a purely descriptive approach by stressing some common themes. He discusses the basic social organization for much of human existence as a fairly egalitarian Pleistocence band, though he is careful to describe signficant changes in technology across this period. With the end of the Pleistocene, and the coming of the more fruitful and predictable climate of the Holocene, he argues that the Pleistocene bands gave way to smaller, family units (households) that would be the germ of future social developments. The gradual emergence of sedentism and agriculture, and ensuing changes, such as use of animals for more than food, generates what he refers to as transegalitarian societies with some social differentiation but not to the extent seen later. Some households eventually acquire significant power and hereditary distinctions occur, resulting "Chiefdoms" and other forms of unequal societies. These societies tend to be unstable and some subsequently generate states-civilizations. He is very good on the role of important technological innovations is these complex processes. The coverage of different regions is very interesting.

Comprehensive, up-to-date overview
By Julian Katz
Coming to this book as a non-expert, I feared it might be a rather dry overview. But as a scholar fresh from the academic fray, Bogucki provides the general reader with a real sense of the excitement of current arguments and debates, offering what seemed to be very fair and conscientious summaries of other scholars' perspectives on key interpretive issues, such as the origins of inequality and the transition to agriculture etc.
At the same time, he is frank about his own conceptual framework, which assumes that societies can best be understood in terms of the individual agents that constitute them, who are conceived as essentially self-interested. This methodological individualism contrasts with holistic approaches that grant more importance to larger social structures in understanding individual behavior and that therefore tend to see human nature as more variable and plastic over time. Because of his assumptions, Bogucki often seems to me to project back into prehistory very modern sounding individualistic motives. Pleistocene band society represents the constraining force of communism on risk-taking individualism. The post-ice-age "flexible foragers" become distant cousins of Eastern Europeans freed from communist constraints and able at last to exercise consumer freedom and possessive individualism. I felt at times that he was losing a sense of the historical distance between the prehistoric peoples and ourselves and regretted not getting a sense of their otherness especially as expressed in their cultural expression.
